Kos Airport - All Information on Kos Airport (KGS)

Kos International Airport is centrally located on the Greek island of Kos, near the village of Andimachia. The airport is commonly known as Hippocrates, or “Ippocrates”, and it has the IATA code of KGS and LGKO is the ICAO code. The Greek spelling of the airport name is Διεθνής Αερολιμένας Κω "Ιπποκράτης".

Kos Airport opened on April 4, 1964 with an extension of the runway happening in 1974. In 1980 a new terminal was built and in 1997 the terminal building was renovated and expanded.

At the end of 2015 Kos Airport along with 13 other Greek airports were privatised through a new agreement between Fraport AG/Copelouzos Group and the Greek privatisation fund. The agreement stated that the joint venture will operate the airports for 40 years as of April 11th, 2017.

In March 2017 Fraport Greece, the Greek subsidiary of Fraport AG, presented their plans for the 14 airports they had been handed control of by the Greek Government. Some of the immediate actions taken at Kos International Airport were to improve lighting, upgrade sanitary facilities, enhance WiFi services, and improve markings of the airside areas as well as the implementation of better fire safety throughout.

The long term improvement plans are due to continue until sometime during 2021, although the pandemic might change these plans, and include a new terminal building, refurbishing of the wastewater treatment plant, more security lanes and check-in counters, and the building of a new fire station.

Most of the flights to and from Kos Airport are charter flights from other European countries and most of them are seasonal to the summer as Kos is a seasonal tourist island.

Kos Airport serves both Domestic and International flights, with almost exclusively Domestic during low season, and it saw a total of 2,676,644 passengers come through it in 2019, which was a slight increase, 0.4%, compared to 2018.

The airport has one asphalt runway, the one that was extended in 1974, of 2,400 m/7,874 ft.
